Anointed Son

PSALM 2:7 | ABBEY BRYANT

This one verse highlights two important attributes of Jesus’ identity.

Firstly, there is Jesus’ sonship to God the Father. Although we were made in the image of God (Gen 1:27), we are not God and do not possess His divine power or authority. However, that is not the case for Jesus – He is not simply an image-bearer of God, He is the begotten Son of God. This key difference of Jesus’ begotten nature means that Jesus inherited the divine nature of God the Father and is one with Him.

The other key characteristic pointed out in the psalm is Jesus’ anointed status. Anointment is often a royal attribute, indicating when one is set apart for divine work. Unlike the earthly kings that we read about throughout scripture, whose kingdoms rise and fall, Jesus! kingdom and authority will reign forever.

We celebrate that, through Jesus’ life and intercession, we have also been offered a seat in the heavenly places next to Christ (Ephesians 2:6). Since Christ has been given dominion over all the world, we are empowered to take the good news of the gospel to the ends of the earth. No human resistance can thwart the ultimate victory that is in King Jesus, the Son of God!
