Passover Lamb

EXODUS 12 | KATIE WINNINGTON-INGRAM

What’s better than Christmas dinner? Lamb chops and flat bread. Why?

Delicious as turkey and stuffing are, what the lamb and unleavened bread point toward is much better, incomparably so. And the taste and satisfaction of the Passover meal lasts forever.

Verses 12-13 tell us exactly what ‘Passover’ means and what God promises to do: judgement on Egypt and salvation for His people, the Israelites.

In verse 29 this judgement is indiscriminate, it’s for everyone - Pharaoh to prisoner. And in a similar way, we all deserve God!s judgement. In a sense, the unleavened bread helps us understand this. Just as a small bit of leaven (yeast) works its way through a piece of dough, so sin infects every human heart.

But there’s good news in Jesus Christ because, just as the Passover lamb promised salvation and deliverance for God!s people, Jesus is our eternal Passover lamb. His blood on the cross delivers us from evil, just as the blood on the Israelites’ doors delivered them from God!s judgement and the final plague in Egypt.

So next time I devour Christmas dinner I will be reminded of the Passover lamb and the unleavened bread - reminded of why Jesus came.
