Luke 2:8-14 - Lisa Dewar
These verses are an important reminder of what Christmas is actually about. An angel of the Lord brings good news of great joy - the birth of ‘a Saviour, the Messiah, the Lord’. These titles given to this new born baby signify that he isn’t just another political leader or prince born into royalty, but he has been anointed by God and has come to save his people from their sin.
God did not choose to share this message with only those who were seen as religious leaders or respected in society, but with Shepherds, who at that time were marginalised and seen as inferior. He wants everyone to hear and respond to this good news regardless of who we are. Just like the shepherds, we may be afraid, but we have a choice to make. Do we turn away or do we trust God's word and follow Him?
These verses also remind us of the amazing love God has for us. He reaches out to meet us where we are. He gave us a Saviour, Jesus, who humbled himself throughout his life, from his birth in a manger to his death on a cross. Through his resurrection we are saved from sin by faith in him, regardless of who we are.
What a great reminder in our uncertain world that great joy and true peace can only be found in Jesus. Be encouraged to share this amazing news with those around you this Christmas.
