Luke 1:39-45 Archie Winnington-Ingram
I love Christmas. It’s my favourite time of year. There's something exciting about cold dark nights, hot chocolate, ice skating, markets, ginger bread, mulled wine, woolly jumpers, offensive lights. I just love it.
But in amongst all of that, it’s all too easy to take my eyes off what makes it such a magical season. (It’s not the presents on Christmas Day).
Instead, it is the wonderful promise of God’s Word. We’ve already seen as we’ve worked through Luke’s gospel in these devotions - Jesus is coming. God’s Word promising the arrival of God’s Son.
Just one thing for us to focus on about this most wonderful promise. In verse 41 of our verses - see Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit. And what does being filled with the Holy Spirit give her?
Well, in verses 42-45 we get what looks like an exclamation - it’s really a sort of early hymn like Mary’s that follows. And what does she say (or sing)? She affirms that the baby in Mary’s womb is the Lord.
In other words, she is filled by the Holy Spirit and believes His Word.
Pray, today, that you might experience the same and sing; “blessed is the child you will bear!”
